How a family olive oil business scaled its SEO with a gourmet focus
A family business selling olive oil was up against a sector dominated by supermarkets and very large industrial brands. The strategy: pivot to gourmet and premium positioning, target product bundles and specific varieties, and combine local and national SEO to reach the customer who genuinely valued a differentiated product.
The challenge
Olive oil SERPs are dominated by large online supermarkets and industrial brands with massive catalogues, enormous domain authority and a long-standing presence in search. Against that, the client started with two clear constraints:
- A limited catalogue:few SKUs compared with the major players, making differentiation by volume difficult.
- No way to competeon generic queries such as “buy olive oil” against the giants.
- But genuinely high-quality product and family traceability:the right customer would value that over price.
How we approached it
The key decision: don’t compete on generic queries, capture the gourmet customer instead. That opened up commercial long-tail terms with less competition and far better margins.
Pivot to gourmet and premium
Positioning by premium product type (varieties, origin, pressing, designation of origin) and by product bundles with differential value. Commercial long-tail with qualified purchase intent.
Local + national acquisition
Combining local SEO to capture nearby customers (collection, local market) with national shipping-focused SEO to reach gourmet consumers across Spain.
Architecture and content by product type
Categories and subcategories built specifically around oil varieties and bundles. Original content at every level, Product + Offer structured data, and Google Merchant aligned.
On that foundation: an initial audit, keyword research prioritising gourmet intent, technical base and Core Web Vitals, a transactional blog oriented towards categories, thorough crawl and indexation monitoring, and contextual backlinks in food and gourmet media.
Visual results
Organic traffic and ranking keyword growth over the course of the project (Ahrefs screenshots, client brand anonymised):
In a highly seasonal sector with strong brands, organic traffic grows from practically zero to ~10,000 visits/month, with the peaks and troughs characteristic of olive oil. Ranking keywords reach ~8,000, with close to 4,000 in the top 20, thanks to the focus on gourmet product and category pages rather than head-on competition with the sector’s giants.
What we achieved
- A marked improvement in visibility.Rankings in gourmet categories and premium bundles that had previously been out of reach for the client. A way out of the competitive deadlock against the sector’s giants.
- Qualified traffic, not passers-by.The traffic captured arrived with gourmet purchase intent, not users hunting for basic prices: better conversion and a higher average order value.
- Balanced local + national acquisition.Local SEO brought in nearby collection and market customers, while national SEO captured gourmet buyers across Spain through shipping.
